2001 SPECIAL EXHIBITION
NANTUCKET SPIRIT: THE ART AND LIFE OF ELIZABETH REBECCA COFFIN
MAY 25 - OCTOBER 8, 2001
Featuring more than twenty-five paintings by Elizabeth R. Coffin (1850-1930), as well as many photographs and decorative objects, this exhibition brings to life an extraordinary Nantucket artist whose story and work is richly deserving of wider recognition. A painter in the American Realist tradition, Coffin made her mark in the competitive New York art world before settling on the island and devoting her life to education, art patronage and philanthropy.
Paintings by Elizabeth Coffin's contemporaries Eastman Johnson, Thomas Eakins and Annie Barker Folger are also included in this special loan exhibition.
Based on the book Nantucket Spirit: The Art and Life of Elizabeth Rebecca Coffin, by Margaret Moore Booker, published by Mill Hill Press, May 2001, on sale at the exhibition.
Open 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. daily, admission $1.00. (Free for NHA members & pass holders.)
